Elementary students at CCES have created some beautiful Valentine themed artworks over the past couple weeks. Check out what each grade did below! K/1 - Tie-Dye HeartsThis is one of my favourite projects to do with this age group because it is incredibly easy and it always turns out fantastic for each kid. All you need is some round coffee filters, washable markers and a spray bottle! It is so fun to watch the excited faces when the colours melt together after spraying each piece. Once they were dry, we folded them in half and cut out a heart from the middle. Aren't the colours incredible?! Grade 1/2 - Love BugsWe started this project by painting our hands and stamping them into the middle of the paper. Once they were dry students added heart-shaped wings, googly eyes, antennas and other fun details. I think these turned out pretty cute! Grade 2/3 - Kandinsky Inspired ArtStudents looked at circle artwork by the famous Wassily Kandinsky before creating these colourful heart mosaics. They used his work as inspiration for their colour pallet as well as his technique of layering shapes within shapes. I absolutely love how these turned out! Grade 3/4 - Love Pop Art PrintsInspired by Robert Indiana's pop art Love sculptures, students created these prints using tempera paint and a scratch-off technique to carve designs in the background. We glued the white letters on each coloured piece which really made the word pop on the page. I really LOVE the final product!

Grade 4/5 students just finished their colourful tree artwork that they started before Christmas. I've done this project before and each time the results are fantastic. I created a simple tree template and printed it on card stock paper. Students used white glue and paintbrushes to cover the trees in layers of colourful tissue squares. Once the trees were done, we used tempera paint to create a winter sky with snow covered ground. The class learned how to use horizontal brush strokes to blend the colours together. Students cut out and glued their trees onto the background and used hole punches to look like falling snow. Some students choose to add details to their artwork using sharpie such as branches and ground beneath their trees. All of the trees turned out beautifully, I absolutely love all the colours!
Grade 6/7 students enjoyed the opportunity to learn about and with artist Katherine Boyer. Katherine Boyer is a graduate of the University of Regina with a BFA in Sculpture and an emphasis on Printmaking. As an emerging Métis artist, Boyer's work is a crossover between traditional and non-traditional printmaking, sculpture and beadwork. Boyer is passionate about engaging with students through exhibitions and programming aimed to encourage critical dialogue around Indigenous issues. Boyer offered our students a virtual tour of her work within the Canada Council of Arts space in Ottawa, and responded to a variety of questions from students. Boyer shared with students how her work represents a rediscovery of personal and cultural history, and her joy to be able to share this knowledge and art with family. She shared how through beading, she found herself on a path to connecting with her Métis roots, and how in many ways her art is bringing history alive. |
