I've created a prezi with student's identity collages exploring how place shapes our identity. Check out the link here to view the presentation! I created this map silhouette with an overview of each student's collage. Afterwards I conferences with each student and asked them to explain some of the images or places in their collage.

What a way to spend a Monday! The grade 3/4 students from both DSCS and CCES traveled to Soda Rock on the Secwepemc territory to experience the legend for themselves.I'm sure to some, this might just look like an ordinary rock in the middle of a field, but to the Secwepemc people this is a sacred place of spiritual cleansing and healing. The mysterious “Soda Rock” holds a plentiful resource of healing mineral water beneath its rock cap. Our special guest from the Bonaparte Nation, Keith Zabotel, shared the history and stories of Soda Rock. He explained to the students how this sacred place has significant cultural meaning and has been a place of gathering for many years. Secwepemc people have passed down the knowledge of this place for generations where many have benefited from its healing and cleansing powers throughout their lifetimes. Keith demonstrated how to show our respect to the rock and to the creator by placing offerings of tobacco at the site. He shared his personal experience of Soda Rock and stories passed down to him from family members. He showed students how to traditionally care for the rock itself as well as the land surrounding it. The students explored and photographed the site in small groups. We are looking forward to looking at the photos and editing them for our digital artifact in the months to come! |
